Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery where doctors use a robotic system to perform procedures through small cuts. The surgeon controls the robot using a special console, allowing for precise movements inside the body.

Why Robotic Surgery Is Used

Robotic surgery is often used for:

  • Colorectal surgery (e.g., cancer, rectal resection)

  • Prostate surgery

  • Gynecologic surgery

  • Kidney surgery

  • Heart and lung procedures

It’s especially helpful in areas that are hard to reach with regular tools or in surgeries that require great precision.

Procedure:

  • Anesthesia: You’re given general anesthesia to sleep during the operation.

  • Small Incisions: Tiny cuts are made in the body instead of one large one.

  • Inserting Instruments: Thin instruments and a tiny camera (with 3D view) are inserted through the incisions.

  • Surgeon at Console: The surgeon sits at a control console and uses hand and foot controls to move the robotic arms.

  • Surgery Performed: The robot mimics the surgeon’s exact movements — but with greater accuracy, flexibility, and range of motion.

  • Closing Incisions: The cuts are closed with stitches or glue.

Advantages of Robotic Surgery

  • Smaller cuts → Less pain and scarring

  • More precise movements → Safer for delicate areas

  • Less blood loss and lower risk of infection

  • Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery

  • Better visibility with 3D high-definition views inside the body

Limitations or Considerations

  • Not suitable for all patients or procedures

  • May be more expensive

  • Requires a trained and experienced surgeon
