Piles (Hemorrhoids)

Piles, also called hemorrhoids, are swollen veins in your bottom (rectum and anus). They can hurt, itch, or bleed. Piles are common, especially in people between 45 and 65 years old. There are two types:

Types of Hemorrhoids

  • Internal Piles: These are inside your bottom. You usually can’t see or feel them. They might bleed during a poop. If they get big, they can come out of the anus (prolapse).

  • External Piles: These are found under the skin near your anus. They can hurt, feel itchy, or bleed. Sometimes, a hard and painful lump appears if a blood clot forms inside

Common Symptoms

  • Bright red blood when you poop.

  • Pain or discomfort, especially with external or prolapsed piles.

  • Itching or irritation around the anus.

  • Swelling near the anus.

Causes

Piles happen when there is too much pressure in the bottom area. This can be caused by:

  • Straining when pooping.

  • Sitting on the toilet too long.

  • Constipation or diarrhea that won’t go away.

  • Being overweight.

  • Pregnancy.

  • Not eating enough fiber.

  • Lifting heavy things often.

How to Prevent Piles

  • Eat more fiber: Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help you poop easily.

  • Drink plenty of water: Stay hydrated to keep your poop soft.

  • Exercise regularly: This helps your digestion and keeps your weight healthy.

  • Don’t wait to go to the toilet: Go when you feel the urge to poop.

  • Don’t strain: Try to relax when you poop. Don’t push too hard.
