Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple Procedure)

This is a major surgery used to treat cancer and other serious conditions in the head of the pancreas. It is one of the most complex surgeries in the digestive system.

Indications for Surgery:

  • Pancreatic Cancer: Especially if the tumor is in the head of the pancreas.

  • Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors: Tumors from hormone-producing cells in the pancreas.

  • Ampullary Cancer: Cancer where the bile and pancreatic ducts meet the small intestine.

  • Duodenal Cancer: Cancer in the first part of the small intestine.

  • Chronic Pancreatitis: Long-term inflammation of the pancreas that causes pain or problems.

Procedure:

  • Anesthesia: You’re put to sleep so you don’t feel anything during surgery.

  • Incision: A large cut is made in your abdomen (belly) to reach the organs.

  • Organs Removed:

    • Head of the Pancreas

    • Duodenum (first part of the small intestine)

    • Gallbladder

    • Part of the Bile Duct

    • Sometimes part of the stomach

  • Reconnecting the Digestive System:

    • Pancreas to Small Intestine (pancreaticojejunostomy)

    • Bile Duct to Small Intestine (hepaticojejunostomy)

    • Stomach to Small Intestine (gastrojejunostomy) – if the stomach is partly removed

Benefits of the Surgery:

  • May Cure Cancer: If caught early and fully removed.

  • Relieves Symptoms: Can reduce pain and other problems caused by the tumor.
