Laparoscopic Total Abdominal Colectomy

This is a surgery where doctors remove the entire colon (large intestine) using small cuts in the belly. It’s called “minimally invasive” because it uses tiny openings instead of one large cut. This method helps treat serious problems with the colon.

Indications for Surgery:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): For people with severe Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis that don’t get better with medicine.

  • Colon Cancer: When cancer affects most or all of the colon.

  • Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP): A genetic condition where lots of growths (polyps) form in the colon and may turn into cancer.

  • Colon Blockage: When the colon is blocked and other treatments haven’t helped.

Procedure:

  • Anesthesia: You’re put to sleep, so you don’t feel anything during the surgery.

  • Small Cuts: The surgeon makes about 4–5 small cuts in your belly.

  • Camera Inserted: A tiny camera (laparoscope) goes in through one cut so the surgeon can see inside on a screen.

  • Surgical Tools Used: Special tools go in through the other cuts to do the surgery.

  • Colon Removal: The whole colon is taken out, along with any nearby tissue or lymph nodes if needed.

  • Reconnecting the Body:

    • In some cases, the small intestine is joined to the rectum so you can still go to the bathroom normally.

    • Sometimes, a temporary opening (called an ileostomy) is made to let waste leave the body into a bag.

Advantages of Laparoscopic Colorectal Resection:

  • Less Pain: Smaller cuts mean less discomfort.
  • Quicker Healing: You may leave the hospital sooner and get back to normal faster.
  • Lower Risk of Infection: Small cuts are less likely to get infected than big ones.
