Laparoscopic Surgery for Stomach Cancer

Doctors use this minimally invasive surgery to take out the part or all of the stomach affected by cancer through small cuts in the abdomen. It uses small cuts and a special camera to see inside the body. This method is mostly used for early-stage stomach cancers and sometimes for more advanced cases.

Indications for Surgery:

Early-stage cancer: Best for cancer that’s just in the stomach lining or barely deeper.

Localized tumors: Works well if the cancer hasn’t spread to other organs.

Types of Laparoscopic Stomach Surgeries

Distal Gastrectomy: Distal Gastrectomy involves removing the lower section of the stomach.

Total Gastrectomy: Removes the entire stomach.

Subtotal Gastrectomy: Removes a large part of the stomach but leaves a small portion.

Proximal Gastrectomy: Proximal Gastrectomy is the removal of the upper portion of the stomach, close to the esophagus

Procedure:

Anesthesia: You’ll be asleep and won’t feel anything.

Small Cuts: 4 to 5 small incisions are made in your belly.

Camera Inserted: A thin camera (laparoscope) goes in to give the surgeon a clear view.

Tumor Removed: The surgeon carefully removes the cancer and nearby lymph nodes.

The leftover part of the stomach is joined to the small intestine so you can continue to digest food normally.

Closing the Cuts: The cuts are closed with stitches or glue.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery

Less Pain: Small cuts hurt less than big ones.

Faster Recovery: You’ll heal and return to normal activities more quickly.

Smaller Scars: Only tiny scars remain after healing.
