Colectomy

Colectomy is a surgery where part or all of the colon (large intestine) is removed. It’s done to treat serious colon problems like cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or severe infections.
Types of Colectomy
Partial Colectomy: Only a part of the colon is removed. This is usually done if the problem is in one small area, like in colon cancer or diverticulitis.
Total Colectomy: The whole colon is removed. This is done if the entire colon is affected, like in ulcerative colitis or genetic conditions like familial polyposis.
Hemicolectomy: One side of the colon (left or right) is removed, often for cancer or diverticulitis.
Procedure for Colectomy
Anesthesia: You are given medicine to make you sleep so you don’t feel pain.
Cutting Open: The doctor makes a cut in your belly to reach the colon.
Removing the Colon:
The healthy parts of the colon or small intestine are then joined back together.
If the whole colon is removed, the doctor may create a new way for waste to leave your body, like an ileostomy (a small opening in the belly) or a pouch inside your body.
Closing Up: The belly is closed with stitches or glue.
Benefits of Colectomy
Treats Serious Illnesses: Helps get rid of cancer, infections, or diseases in the colon.
Eases Symptoms: Can stop pain, bleeding, or blockage caused by colon problems.
