Pancreatic Resection (including Distal Pancreatectomy)

This is a surgery to remove part or all of the pancreas. It is usually done to treat pancreatic cancer, non-cancerous (benign) tumors, or other problems with the pancreas. The type of surgery depends on where the problem is in the pancreas.

Distal Pancreatectomy:

This surgery removes the body and tail of the pancreas. Sometimes, the spleen is also removed. It is used when tumors or issues are in the back part of the pancreas.

Procedure for Distal Pancreatectomy

  • Anesthesia: You are put to sleep so you feel no pain.

  • Incision: A large cut is made in the belly, or a few small cuts are made using a camera (laparoscopic surgery).

  • Removal:

    • The spleen is also removed if needed.
  • Reconstruction:

    • The remaining pancreas is reconnected to the digestive system to keep digestion working properly.

    • The way this is done depends on whether the spleen was removed.

  • Closing the Incision: The cut is closed with stitches or surgical glue.

Benefits of the Surgery:

  • Chance of Cure: May cure the disease or remove the tumor completely.

  • Symptom Relief: Can help with pain or other symptoms caused by pancreatic problems.
